Some Snowy Sunday Sights

My area was hit with our first decent snowfall of the year today.  I didn't get the opportunity to go out birding, but there was plenty of activity at the feeders which was pleasant to observe from in a warm house.

dark-eyed juncos
mourning doves
downy woodpecker

blue jay, northern cardinal, red-bellied woodpecker
I'm hoping to get the opportunity to get out tomorrow and do some more local birding.  Southern Ontario has been seeing some interesting birds lately so I'm hopeful for some good sightings.  A cave swallow would be nice.  There have been multiple sightings over the last few days along the lake according to other bloggers and eBird (see map below).

Cave swallows are occasional visitors to Ontario and would be a great sighting for me considering that they commonly reside along the southern end of North America.  This cold and snow will likely finish them off.

  1. We had 4-5 cm here last night. 4-5 cm more than I wanted to see!
No sign of Cave Swallows at Rondeau this weekend. They usually are just passing through when seen though. Good luck if you get out!

    1. Thanks for the update on the swallows Blake. Some say I hope to add them to my l list. The cold last night left . Thin layer of ice and as a result my afternoon at the Mitchell lagoons was very slow.

  2. We have exactly zero cm of snow here. I love Northern Cardinals so much, but its been quite a while since I've seen one. Cave Swallows head up to Ontario very frequently it seems lately. Good luck on your search!

    1. We had temperatures of -9C overnight and a bit more snow, lightly freezing ponds and making birding pretty slow. Sounds like it's supposed to warm up later in the week. I really enjoy seeing cardinals too. Are they not normally found in your area?

    2. Update: I was looking at eBird reports and I see cardinals are pretty rare for you in Alberta. Good luck seeing one again sometime soon.
